The fauna of High Tatras
There is 8 species of amphibians, 3 species of reptiles, 115 species of birds and 42 species of mammals living in High Tatras. In the forest you can find the animals such as: A fox, a marten, a wild cat, a polecat or a badger. In a higher area there are the bears or lynxes. A volf belongs to the rarer animals. The most typical animals living in our mountains are the chamois, the marmots and the golden eagle, that is very rare.

Bear (Ursus
arctos)
Bear is 2 m long and weight 150 – 350 kg. It feeds fruits, case
worms, carrions. Vermins, but also venison fade, because people
gather fruits. Bear is forced to look for food near people.
The worst is , when it get up to rumble arround human dwellings.
Bear ransacks dust-bins filled in by rests of food from catering
establishment, or when accusomed bear looks up man and learns
it youngs. Nowadays there are an increased degree of bears.

Chamois
(Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica)
Chamois populates weadows and steep Tatra walls. Chamois lives
in troops, which leads old dam. Billy – goats, wich are old,
live recluse. Young are bred in May and June. In 1994, 490 chunks
live in the High Tatras. Nowadays the degree minimises rapidly.
In 1999 there were only 79 chunks. |

Eagle (Aquila
chrisaetos)
Eagle is the biggest bird of prey in the High Tatras. The span
of its flanks is 2 metres and weighs 4 kg, but can carry sack
7 kg weigh.It feeds mamals like marmot, vole and chamois youngs.
It nests in the heads of trees or in stonerifts. In 1994 19
chunks live in the High Tatras. Nowadays the population of eagles
minimises. |

Lynx ostrovid
(Lynx lynx)
Lynx is the third –biggest carnivore in Slovakia. It grows up
into 1,3 m lenght and wieghs 35 kg (look at pict. n. 11). It
lives recluse. Lynxs unite only in the period of copulation
from February to the beginnig of April. Youngs are bred from
May to June. Lynx feeds roes, deers, game but nips daniels,
chamois too. |
